4th of February is historically important day for all Sri Lankans. We got independence from the British rulers on this day in the year 1948. MEC community commemorated the Independence Day with the participation of representatives from Mundal Divisional Secretariat, Madurankuliya Grama Niladhari, Madurankuliya Traders Union, and neighbors of MEC, officers of Mercy Lanka, all staff members and students of MEC. The programme started at 7:30 a.m. with religious observance. Mas.M.I.M.Ishfaq of Grade 12 (Bio Science) recited some verses from the Holy Quraan and Sinhala translation was given by Mas.M.N. Abdullah of Grade 7.The Quraan verses were about living together with other communities.
Following the religious observance the representative of Divisional Secretary hoisted the National flag, MEC Secretary As Shk. A.C.M.Rameez (Naleemi) hoisted the school flag and Head of Moral Education section As.Shk. Abdullah Muneer hoisted the Mercy Lanka flag. The national anthem was played by MEC Band Group. This was followed by the School Anthem by school girls. Head of Formal Education Mr.M.S.Mahroof welcoming the gathering reminded the contribution of Muslims in obtaining freedom.
Mas. A.A.Ali Izzath of Grade 11, while speaking about our independence urged everyone to follow our leaders who worked together irrespective of religion and the languages spoken to get freedom from British. . Following his speech Ms. Subashini Fernando, formal school teacher spoke about the contribution made by Muslims and Tamils in getting Independence and reminded how Muslims and Tamils lived together with the Majority Sinhalese community. As. Shk. A.I.M.Rifas (Naleemi) proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the programme. The programme came to an end with Dua prayers.
Trees were planted by the representative of Divisional Secretary, Grama Niladhai and President of Traders Union to mark this occasion. Mas. F.R.Zaky of Grade 12 (Bio Science) conducted the entire programme.
